Our Tanist

Hon. Simon John Boyd

Simon’s lineage extends back to the time before the name Boyd existed. More immediately, Simon is the Grandson of Gilbert Allan Rowland Boyd, 6th Baron Kilmarnock, Chief of Name and Head (Chief) of Clan Boyd. He is the nephew of Alastair Ivor Gilbert Boyd, 7th Baron Kilmarnock, Chief of Name and Head (Chief) of Clan Boyd. He is the eldest son of Dr. Robin Jordan Boyd, 8th Baron Kilmarnock.

Simon is styled “The Honorable” as he is the child of the current Baron Kilmarnock (a Peerage Title of the United Kingdom) and will become the 9th Baron Kilmarnock when the time comes. He is also styled “Tanist(e)” as he is the Heir Apparent to the Scottish title of Chief of Name and Head (Chief) of Clan Boyd.

For more than 10 years, Simon has been growing his relationship with HIS clan and into the role he holds and will hold to his death. Although he was born in London, he has a great love for Scotland, particularly the Highlands, where he took his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award while still at school.

Educated at Aldenham School, London, he achieved a BTEC in Art & Design from Middlesex University, London, and a BA in Fine Art from the same university.

Simon has been an active artist based in Argentina since 2007. In 2009, he had a major solo exhibition at the British Arts Centre (Buenos Aires), and in 2016, he participated in the International Biennial of Contemporary Art (Buenos Aires). His works are a brilliant blend of realism and abstraction. Each time one looks at his paintings, it is not unusual to notice a bit of something that was not immediately apparent on first viewing.

His paintings of knights jousting, some of which have been displayed at our clan tents, were inspired by his love of that Romantic period of English painting.

Regarding his passion for art, Simon stated, "I am inspired by my natural surroundings of La Pampa, particularly the wide-open skies and vibrant quality of light. My work is autobiographical in the sense that it is the convergence of two worlds: my English culture and background contrasted with life in South America."

Simon is also a keen saxophonist and music producer. Although Simon is a public figure, please respect that he is also a private person. He is happily married with two children.
